Measuring Progress

GET INVOLVED

We know what Robert F. Kennedy knew 40 years ago: Numbers matter. Better measurements of societal progress and well-being change how we define success as a nation. That makes a difference in policy decisions.

We believe the Gross Domestic Product as a statistic ignores environmental degradation, poverty, income disparity, health care outcomes and other quality of life issues. As our nation’s economic report card, the GDP grades the wrong subjects.

Do you agree?

Here’s what you can do: Call or write your Senators or Representative now. Tell them they need to urge the next President to change how we measure success:

·  Issue the GDP with caveats, such as the fact that it doesn’t measure the
health of our environment and disparity in our incomes.

·  Expand and update GDP so that it better measures non-market activities
like the impacts of pollution, household labor and time spent volunteering.

·  Create new measures of success.

Here’s how you can contact your Senator or Representative:

United States House of Representatives
United States Senate
